Genetically Modified Foods
(Deliciousmagazine)
Foods that have been modified unaturally through processes that include biotechnology are commonly referred to as genetically modified foods. Normally, a crop’s DNA is modified for the addition of an unnatural trait that would help it grow faster, resist disease, produce extra nutrients, or have a longer shelf life. Genetically modified foods are criticized because many believe that they are poor for health and the environment. With the introduction of GMF, agri-industries have emerged to control the production and retail of many foods with their patents, competing and eliminating many small, local and individual farmers. The majority of GMOs are used with commodity crops like soybeans, corn, and cotton. The United States is the highest producer in the world of GMFs. 85% of American grown corn and 91% of soybeans are genetically modified. Scientists have estimated that 70% of foods on a shelf at grocery stores contain at least one genetically modified ingredient. Most processed foods are genetically modified.
