Discuss the movement to “eat local”, “eat seasonal”, and “slow-food”
(Liveorginally)
Eat Local
Many have joined a movement to Eat Local foods to encourage the development of self-sustainable and natural, organic farms to prevent the spread of industrial food-monopolies. The movement wants to minimize the time, gaps, and wastes spent on the processing, shipping, and selling of foods in order to have local and healthy companies have the chance to succeed and supply an area with food that’s good for the animals, the environment, and the consumers. Eating locally will ensure that small businesses provide customers with the freshest quality of produce and animals.
Eat Seasonal
By eating seasonally, the amount of pollution emitted from transporting out-of-season goods throughout the country is decreased, as well as the amount of genetically modified chemicals used to enhance crop growth. When crops are grown out of season, farmers used a lot of alternative methods, such as GMOs in order for their crops to survive. The chemicals used in the GMOs, fertilizers, and pesticides are emitted to the environment and cause pollution problems throughout our Earth, depleting many essential resources. This pollution to our water and soil is added to the pollution to our air used when trucks transport these modified foods throughout the world. Therefore, by eating seasonally, one hopes that pollution will decrease and that more organic farming methods will be put in to practice.
Slow Food
The Slow Food Movement was founded in Italy by Carlo Petrini in 1986. Its purpose was to raise awareness of eating foods that are grown in healthy environments for animals, plants, and the environment. With many natural foods becoming extinct because of the fast-food industry and conventional farming methods, foods are starting to lose their variety and distinct tastes. The movement hopes to offer an alternative to fast-food and to encourage organic farming methods that produce natural foods. They also hope to promote small and local farming businesses to overcome the agri-industry that has monopolized the production of food.
